Open Source Apostles' Creed

The Apostles’ Creed  ("Creed" is from the Latin word "belief") is an ancient  (c. 390) formulation/summary of Christian faith and belief, still widely used in corporate worship.

Here it is:

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Creator of Heaven and earth;

I believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord,

He was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary.

He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead.

On the third day He rose again. He ascended into Heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father.

He will come again to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,

the holy catholic Church,

the communion of saints,

the forgiveness of sins,

the resurrection of the body,

and the life everlasting.

                             Amen.

Watch these  brief videos for background

Note that the only information given between the description of Jesus’ birth and suffering is a comma.  In light of class discussions, write a line or two to go in after that comma.   What seems missing?

DON'T LOOK AT OTHER POSTS FOR IDEAS UNTIL YOU ARE DONE>  THIS IS AN IMPORTANT EXPERIENCE FOR YOU TO DO ON YOUR OWN<
  • f, for your paper, you want to consider CHIASM  in Philemon, after searching out any such structures yourselves (which you are getting good at!), consider:

A key chiasm doesn't show up in our class translation,  They have "flattened it out" and retained its meaning.  But the chiasm is an important way of saying: THIS IS A HUGE POINT.  We miss that if it is flattened out.  Verse 5 in class Bible says "because I hear of your love (A) for all the saints (B) and your faith (A) toward the Lord Jesus (B)"  But the original word order in the Greek is this:

    " I hear about your

ABAB is a parallelism, not reversed, so not a chiasm.
ABBA is a reverse parallelism, this is chiasm.

It's a chiasm because Love and Faith are attributes, thus a pair, and Jesus and saints are persons.  We know "faith" connects to Jesus in the Bible, never people.

Will you bounce?": the most common errors in Philemon papers, includes sample paper (do asap)

       Mechanics Self-Test

      Overview

This is a quick self-test to let you know how you might do on your signature paper with mechanical errors.  Remember, papers cannot be accepted if they have mechanical errors in every paragraph.  Also, remember from syllabus:  no use of "you"/"your" or contractions in signature.

Post as instructed by WED pm. than post a short response to 2 others Fri pm

      Instructions

      Do a b and c.

Watch   short video, and LOL at Dave.

As you'll remember, for Bib classes, there are two big rules on signature papers:

--you can't use "you" (or "you words like"your" or "yourself")

      --you can't use contractions.

Also, if there are red marks in every paragraph for mechanical (grammar, spelling, etc), your paper will need to be rewritten before it is accepted.

      a) Take the quick test below  to see how well you will do on mechanical errors on signature paper.
Read the  sample signature paper  excerpt below, and either copy it  into comments below , making corrections in red, or noting them and correcting them..
Don't look at the self-grading video until done.
      ----

Not since Moses’s day had there been a leader like Paul.  In a sense, Paul

was the most important leader mentioned in the bible.  Not only was he an

Apostle, but the most prominent  and clear headed one ever mentioned by

God in his Word.   Maybe the most prominent character in Christianity’s

history.  Due to his special calling, his ability to face prosecution and abuse,

his status as an Elder and his great Faith, he ranks highly, even though he is
not one of the original 12 Disciples, and wasn’t even mentioned in the

Biblical texts that discuss Jesus’s earthly days.

In a way, you could compare him to today’s Pope, or the President of the

United States—or more appropriately, the Senior Pastor of a large church or

the Bishop of a denomination.  Think of him like a modern Saint, a person

that has great Spiritual courage and skill.  A person that  loves God and His

ways.  Which makes him all the more remarkeable in the way he treated

Onesimus’s owner, Philemon.  Philemon was a humble man, that had a

Church in his house, and that owned Philemon as a slave.    In its own

unique way, the paradox of Paul the great leader being kind and

compassionate to people of lower Economic status like Onesimus (a lowly

Slave) shows that he was also a great sheperd not one who would Lord it

over people.  He had no allusions of being the King.

Let's examine in detail the world of Paul, Philemon and Onesimus--the 3

key players in a story with abundent  lessons for our day.  In a funny verse,

the Bible says "a dog returns to it's own vomit."     Thinking about an

animal being attracted to there own vomit is a strong image and thought

provoking. This remind's me of  the religous leaders Jesus confronted in the

Temple.  One Sunday, my Pastor preached on this.  Matthew 11:15, " Jesus

said, "My house shall be a House of prayer, but you have made it a den of

robbers."  When people think they're more imporatnt then others based on

Religion or Race,  the affect is  divine anger.  I have thought alot about why

Followers of God would ever think they are holier then other people.   Or

how they could justify hating a person that was innocent or poorer then

them.  It's a mystery to me, and a headscratching one at that.   I sometimes

literally loose my mind over things like these.

Think about someone that dessecrated the Alter of a Church, or think's it's

alright to have a prejudist attitude.  What an extordinary embarassment for

priviledged people to act that way; witholding grace from a person that is in

need.  Our professor talked about this one day when we did a practise for this
      signature assignment.

b)DON'T GO ANY FURTHER UNTIL YOU HAVE FINISHED THE CORRECTIONS..
Click here for a complete signature paper, which would flunk due to mechanical errors alone.  They are all noted in red and corrected.

Here are the "13 Commandments"--that is the most common mechanical errors in signature papers over the years

      1)contractions/you
2)clauses and fragments that are not full sentences
3)commas where they don't belong (or no commas where they do)
      4) CAPS: a)words like king, president, pastor, apostle are NOT capitalized unless used as a title.  "Barrack Obama is the President" is  not correct.   "President Obama says.." is.
b)often students capitalize words because they are important: faith, prayer, altar,   Incorrect
c)"Bible" is capitalized; "biblical" is not  Some formats allow Bible to not be capitalized; if you choose that, be consistent throughout paper
5)Careful with plurals, possessives, apostrophes etc.  Google if you need help.
This sign is all over the country, but dead wrong!
6)For historical figures whose name ends in s you write  "Jesus' disciples," not "Jesus's."  Note you have a lot of these who may appear in your paper: Onesimus, Moses, et al
7)Traditions and translations vary as to whether or not "He" "Him" "His" are capitalized when referring to God or Jesus.  Either way you choose, be consistent thought the paper.
      8)"Their"  vs "they're" type errors
9)It's vs its.  Read this for help.

10)singular and plural disagreement across sentences  Google for help

11)Departments vary in this. For biblical studies, spell out numbers under 100. Except user numerals for Bible chapter and verse

12)HUGE: "who" for people; "that" for things.  "A person that likes cookies" is wrong.

      13)miselanyaous speling errrors

This sign in a church is incorrect:

      • -Here's a video I show to first of all, thank everyone for the great presentations last week, and then for  a reminder for any who may have who missed the major point about Samaritans being foreigners, outcasts, "bastards" (per Kraybill) and enemies.
You may want to watch it so you ace 4.3 this week!

      Completion requirements

      • In the classroom, we do this assignment in pairs, one student presenting live to another at their table.  Here in the online world, you  record a video of you talking through your presentation (Power point with audio and no video is OK as last resort, but not the idea, as part of grade is on the presentation itself)
      • (note: extra credit hidden in one of the links below)
      •  Video will only be for Dave  until next week, then parties will watch 2 presentation videos of their partymates. Grades and comments by Dave will be posted privately
      • To post your video, use YouTube or vidgrid, and be sure it is embedded in your post, and not just a link that doesn't click. (instructions on 1.1)

Your task is to make a 4-5 minute video presentation  (yes, it's okay if you go over, but you will not want go less than that) on  the famous parable usually (misleadingly?)  called the Good Samaritan in Luke 10: 25-37. Read the parable in your class Bible or here. This presentation is not a topical  devotional, but a Three Worlds presentation in which you try to discover the meaning of the parable in context. Consider anything we have learned in class, read what happens before and after the parable etc.

If you are still struggling to get what we mean by Three Worlds, review week 1 video, but  it is recommended you jump ahead and look at an upcoming assignment, Three Worlds: St Amber  (pictured at left with the crazy pastor/Bible teacher) who officiated her wedding) and Three Daves.  It's h ere.  St .Amber is a former student who had her own way of picturing the Three Worlds.

      --

      HELP?:

       Watch this :

Definitely review what a parable is and why it must be offensive (Dave's videos on   Forum : Parable as Loud Farts etc.

to get the HISTORICAL WORLD, definitely notice and review this week's readings. See Dave's video for extra and huge help about where to read.

See this week's  Kraybill and Fee and Stuart pages on the GOOD SAMARITAN  parable

You may look at the  explanatory notes at the bottom of the page where this parable is told  in your Bible.
Here is some good commentary on the parable if you like.  The short info by Keener is especially helpful.

Here is a great sample presentation on another famous parable: "Prodigal Son"  . Here's an ABBREVIATED example  of a presentation using a different text.

Dave's  extra cred  video this week on  on Matthew 18  HERE  may give you some ideas, but you are certainly not expected to do anything  as long or detailed as that video. It's helpful as it models the kind of things to notice when using Three Worlds, and because Matthew 18 is a parable (or parables, you decide how many)

More help, as promised, on  week 3 zoom.. There are two sections where we give big help. Zoom will be posted  in 3.1b for those who can't make it.

It's okay if your presentation is largely a list of questions that would need to be answered to truly interpret this text well.

Don’t treat this as a practical “devotional,” it’s a Three Worlds analysis of the text.  You will want to make a practical app in your contemporary world analysis, though.

Upload  or link your  video   here on 3.7.  Dave's comments  with the grade will be detailed and private.

      A

Oh, and if you haven't watched this video below yet, I doubt if you will be sorry.  Heavy headsup:

To post your video, use YouTube or vidgrid, and be sure it is embedded in your post, and not just a link that doesn't click. (instructions on 1.1)

.  Next week, you can watch your party mates videos to comment on.

Hello saints andd Bible scholars. Here are three teachers, each about ten minutes)  on  the topic of reading the Bible structurally, and not just in "verse-itis.""

I hope you watch all three, but at least watch the first and comment on the first one, It has been very helpful to students.  You will finally see why you often see me wielding an apple and an orange in my videos.  They are plastic, as you can see my dog found out . Extra credit if you  catch any chiasms he made in his talk (Clue: some of you know one of them from Sunday School).

Maybe at least preview the other two to see if they might help., even though the second one is ME (:

The second two deal specifically with Matthew's gospel, and give some of the same info from different angles (but my jokes are better)..

I'll give extra credit of you watch  two or all three, and comment on the ones you watched.  Taken together, they may give way too much info to take in ,They are in order of easy>middle>hardest, perhaps.  But get what you can and it may well help you read the Bible well, and ace your signature paper.

Comments can be short, but should convince me you watched.

You are Bible scholars, all.  Enjoy.
